This stage may be seen as one of amalgamation and assimilation. Re-Entry Shock Stage This happens when an ELL returns to the old culture for a visit and notices how many things have changed in the country as well as how they themselves have changed.

What this means is that, when ELLs are engaged in talk, they make communication modifications that help language become more comprehensible, they more readily solicit corrective feedback, and they adjust their own use of English. The discrepancy in the rate of acquisition shown by ELLs can be attributed to the amount and the quality of input they receive as well as the opportunities they have for output.
